A MUTTERING prosecutor has delayed a High Court action by media lawyers attempting to block a magistrate’s order that journalists surrender materials recorded during the death of vigilante Rashaad Staggie. Staggie, a notorious gangster and drug dealer, was killed during a People Against Gangsterism and Drugs march two years ago. Inquest Magistrate Johan Venter has ordered journalists to testify and surrender photographs. Editors have refused to oblige, arguing it will compromise the independence of the press but the high court challenge to Venter’s order has been delayed as tape recordings of inquest proceedings did not pick up the voice of prosecutor Willie Viljoen. Inquest records are needed for the high court application.
