President Nelson Mandela has been named joint winner of a Nigerian honour recognising exemplary leadership in Africa, along with outgoing Nigerian ruler General Abdulsalami Abubakar. Mandela and Abubakar were named co-recipients late on Thursday of the Zik Prize for Political Leadership, instituted in 1994 in memory of Nigeria’s first president, Nnamdi Azikwe. The two were chosen by the Advisory Board of Public Policy Research and Analysis Centre, the organisers of the annual award, for their outstanding leadership and contributions to the development of their countries.
