QUAKE HALTS ANGLOGOLD OPERATIONS

ANGLOGOLD said on Friday that an earthquake has halted operations at its Matjhabeng mine in the Free State province but most of the workforce had been accounted for. The earthquake, measuring 4,2 on the Richter scale, hit the South African gold mining town of Welkom in the early hours on Friday causing damage to buildings and cutting off water and power supplies. AngloGold, the world’s biggest gold producer, had lost power supplies at its four mines in the area after the earthquake which forced underground mine workers to be brought to the surface through alternative shafts, the spokesman said.
