THE second of the three toll gates along the N4 highway between Witbank and Komatipoort in Mpumalanga will be opened next Tuesday. Motorists already paying R20 to pass through the Middelburg toll gate, can expect to pay an extra R30 to pass through the Machadodorp toll gate when it opens next week. This means a return trip from Johannesburg to any of the tourist attractions in the Mpumalanga Lowveld will cost an extra R100. Spokesperson for Trans African Concessions (Trac) which is building the R2-billion road, Lianne Tarrant, says residents of Machadodorp wills only have to pay R2,90 at the toll, however. “I think this agreement will go a long way in aiding negotiations with Middelburg residents,” she said. Middelburg residents currently pay R5 to pass through the toll gate at their town.
