THE African National Congress on Wednesday reacted with anger to an announcement by the Independent Broadcasting Authority allocating times for political party election broadcasts. The broadcasts — prepared by political parties to inform voters of their policies — will be run unedited between May 19 and 31. The ANC was allocated the most broadcast time on the national stations — nine hours — followed by the African Christian Democratic Party, the United Democratic Movement and the Inkatha Freedom Party which each got six. The New National Party, Democratic Party, Azanian People’s Organisation, Pan Africanist Congress, Socialist Party of Azania and United Christian Democratic Party were each given five public electoral broadcast hours. The ANC charged, however, there are “glaring inconsistencies” in the way the IBA has divided up broadcast times. “Parties with as few as two representatives in the National Assembly have been allocated in excess of 50% of the time allocated to the ANC, with 255 representatives in the National Assembly,” it said.
