JONAS Savimbi, leader of the UNITA rebel movement in Angola, has denied that there is a humanitarian crisis in Angola, the BBC reported on Monday. In an interview with the BBC’s Portuguese service, Savimbi said that all such claims were “lies” and that international aid “was stolen by government soldiers.” Humanitarian officials in Angola have said an estimated 2 million people have been displaced by fighting, and citing starvation in besieged government-held cities, they have described the humanitarian situation as “extreme”.
