GOVT PLANS SMALLER PRISONS

THE government plans to build a series of smaller prisons that will house as few as 200 inmates Correctional Services Minister Ben Skosana said on Monday. Speaking before parliament, Skosana said that the smaller prisons will house up to 200 inmates. Medium prisons would house between 800 and 1500 inmates, and large prisons 2000 and more. The first super-maximum security prison at Kokstad will be completed next year, while a facility to cater for women with young children is also in the pipeline.
