BOTSWANA has opened a US$5-million accountancy college in Gaborone described by Minister of Finance Ponatshego Kedikilwe as the way for Botswana to ensure a “preponderance of citizen accountants.” “We are determined to see our economy served by citizen accountants in the foreseeable future,” Kedikilwe said. In 1996 there were 500 qualified accountants, but only 40 were Botswanan nationals. “Accountants are the decision-makers in business, and citizens must be at the heart of this decision-making in Botswana,” Kedikilwe added. “Having enough qualified citizen accountants is a prerequisite to our future economic growth.” The Botswana Accountancy College has already surpassed its target of producing 200 qualified accountants by the year 2000.
