THE cashew industry in Mozambique is demanding that Parliament urgently passes a Bill to ban crop exports for ten years, and rescue moribund processing plants. Lobbyists are urging MPs to reject any last-minute watering-down of the wording of the proposed law. The Bill is strongly supported by deputies from the ruling Frelimo Party, and seeks a total ban on the export of raw, unprocessed nuts unless the local processing industry’s needs have been fully met. The Bill also calls on the government to adopt a clear re-industrialisation policy, giving incentives for the reopening of processing factories that have closed, and mobilising resources to pay debts owed to the workers.
