HEALTH ministers from across Southern Africa are discussing the cost of accessing anti-AIDS drugs at a special two-day meeting in Johannesburg. South African health department spokesperson, Lulu Sebake, said on Thursday that ministers from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) are meeting at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. They are also discussing the latest development in anti-retroviral drugs, vaccines and the safety of blood transfusions, as well as the transmission of the disease from mothers to their unborn babies and the effectiveness of the drug Nevirapine. Sebake said the 14 ministers and Rwanda’s health minister, their senior officials and HIV/AIDS and STD programme managers, would also learn how to review the results of research studies done in the region. The meeting is a follow-up of the HIV/AIDS conference that was held in Zambia in September and is being hosted by South Africa’s health department, in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNAIDS.
