THE son of paedophile Gert van Rooyen, who escaped from a Pretoria police station early on Thursday, has been recaptured. Gerhard van Rooyen, 31, was re-arrested at 6.30pm while walking along the Old Warmbaths Road near Zambezi Drive in Pretoria North. Early on Thursday morning he apparently asked to make a phone call, then slipped away. Van Rooyen was serving a 15-year jail sentence for fraud in Pretoria Central Prison. He was temporarily moved to Pretoria north for the purposes of a police investigation. The probe related to Van Rooyen’s escape from Weskoppies in Pretoria while he was awaiting trial earlier in the year. Van Rooyen’s father Gert was linked to the disappearance without trace of five schoolgirls in the late 1980s. Gert and his lover Joey Haarhoff committed suicide in 1990 while being pursued by police in Pretoria.
