ANNOUNCEMENT of final official results from Mozambique’s presidential and parliamentary elections was delayed Monday to allow time to verify the results with the political parties involved, the National Elections Commission (CNE) said. The CNE said it will try “its best to publish the results by Tuesday.” The results were billed to be released on Monday amid allegations of rigging from the opposition Renamo. The former rebel Renamo was already calling for a re-run before the final results were published. Partial results have put incumbent President Joaquim Chissano ahead with 52% of the vote against his sole rival Afonso Dhlakama’s 48%. In the legislative elections, the ruling Frelimo is ahead of Dhlakama’s main opposition Renamo-Electoral Union. Frelimo took 4% and Renamo 38,5% of the parliamentary vote.
