SUNDAN’S oil exports are expected to reach $1,7-billion this year, more than double the estimated earnings in 1999. Combined with a recovery in agricultural exports, this will leave Sudan with a trade surplus of some $230-million, its first such surplus in over 20 years. The overall current account would remain in deficit, however, as foreign oil firms recouped their investments and repatriated profits.
‘TOBACCO CURBS WILL HURT FARMERS’
KENYAN agriculture minister Chris Obure has cautioned the World Bank and the World Health Organisation on a proposed tobacco convention, stressing the social and economic importance of the crop to farmers in Africa. The controversial convention seeks a comprehensive ban on advertising and marketing, increased risks and health information and a stop to tobacco production by 2003. The World Bank also says it will not provide support for agricultural schemes that include tobacco production.
