THE United Democratic Movement said on Thursday that the R74-million earmarked for a special government drive against HIV/Aids is inadequate. UDM health spokesman Manna Naidoo said that while the funds are welcome, the amount is not sufficient in the light of the endemic proportions of the problem in South Africa. He is also concerned about a lack of information on how the funds will be spent. Cabinet decided on Wednesday that an extended HIV/Aids awareness campaigns in schools will form part of a special R74-million government drive against the disease. The department of education will receive R31-million from the extra amount, with the departments of health and welfare receiving R36-million and R6,8-million respectively to fight the disease.
