CANADIAN mining giant Falconbridge has formed a “strategic alliance” with Impala Platinum Holdings (Implats) to undertake joint exploration for platinum group metals. Under the five-year agreement, Falconbridge will conduct grassroots exploration for new high quality platinum group metals projects worldwide. Implats will participate by contributing early stage project funding. After the earn-in phase for each project, a 50/50 joint venture will be formed. Implats is a major producer of platinum group metals from its mines and processing facilities in South Africa while Falconbridge produces “significant” platinum group metals as a by-product of its nickel mining and processing in Canada and Norway. – AFP CUSTOM SHARE SERVICE
