RIOTING has broken out in three Brazilian jails, including two in Sao Paulo state – the scene of a massive prison revolt two weeks ago. Police said inmates had strangled one prisoner and wounded another before agreeing to end their riot and release about 20 hostages in Adriano Marrey jail in Guarulhos, a city adjacent to Brazil’s biggest city of Sao Paulo. The jail was one of the main centres of the country’s biggest-ever prison uprising last month in which 20 000 inmates in 27 Sao Paulo jails rebelled and 19 were slain by other inmates or police. Filthy, overcrowded jails and inhumane treatment of inmates often provoke prison riots in Brazil. – Reuters
