IN NIGERIA, CHRISTIAN DEFEND FAITH

THE main Christian association in northern Nigeria’s largest city, Kano, protested on Thursday to President Olusegun Obasanjo over the recent destruction of 17 churches saying Christians would defend their faith to “the last drop of blood”. In an open letter to Obasanjo, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) said that the churches were demolished in the city’s Bompai district in recent weeks. Kano, the largest city in northern Nigeria, is a mainly Muslim city and last year the authorities in Kano State adopted the Islamic code known as the Sharia, over the objections of the Christian minority. “For many years, Christians in Kano State have suffered in silence due to the oppression and suppression of Christians by the government of the state and various Islamic groups,” CAN said.
