LIFTLESS IN HILLBROW

A 26-YEAR-OLD South African woman opened the door to a lift (elevator) in a block of flats in Johannesburg — fell four floors, and survived, emergency services said Friday. “When the doors opened, she stepped into what was supposed to be the lift,” on the sixth floor of the flats in the run-down neighbourhood of Hillbrow on Thursday afternoon, the emergency services said in a statement. “To her horror, she plummeted down the lift shaft and landed on the second floor, on top of the lift which was stationary on the first floor.” A bystander said the lights in the lift were not working and the woman assumed that she was walking into the lift. She was rescued by bystanders and taken by ambulance to a hospital with lower leg fractures and possible internal injuries. – AFP
