ROME ADOPTS HIV BABY

THE Rome municipality symbolically adopted a two-month-old baby girl infected with the virus that causes Aids after her Nigerian-born mother died from a drug overdose, officials said this weekend. The mother, a 28-year-old drug addict who suffered from Aids, died on Friday. Deputy Rome mayor Enrico Gasbarra said after seeing the baby at Rome’s San Filippo Neri hospital he wanted her ”to become the symbol of how generous Rome can be.” ”This beautiful girl was born under the most difficult conditions,” he said. ”I don’t know if she already has a name but we will call her Romana.” The orphaned baby is to remain under observation for some time to monitor her HIV status. At a later date she may be turned over to foster parents or be adopted. – Sapa
