What Telkom has set up

By end of March 2001, Telkom had:

* 129 ATM points of presence across the country. * Installed 374 062 Integrated Service Digital Network (ISDN) channels providing end-to-end digital connectivity to business. * About 1 196 000km of optical fibre in the network. * Installed 343-million kilometres of transmission circuits with 792 000 ports.

* Built a data network with 43 365 2MB lines and 156 138 sub-rate lines. * Digitised 627 switches. * A more than 99% digital network. * Telkom offers public switched telephone network services from South Africa to more than 271 destinations. * Traditional switched transit solutions are supplied to 86 carriers worldwide.

* Packet-switched data services via international gateways to other public switched data networks are offered to more than 90 countries. * The SA Direct service is available in 54 countries. * About 3 000 VSAT installations extend the reach of multinational clients operating in Africa. * Through the Regional Information Initiative, Telkom and the Southern African Development Community countries have a number of projects aimed at upgrading and expanding the telecommunications network and establishing a regional network with advanced technology capable of linking all countries in the development community.
