COURT ACQUITS 6-YEAR-OLD ON DROWNING CHARGES

HUMAN rights groups welcomed a Nigerian court’s decision to acquit a six-year-old boy accused of drowning a baby, and said the case should not have been prosecuted in the first place. The child, who lives in the Dutsen Reme quarters in the town of Bakori, in Katsina state, and a middle-aged man, Sahabi Adamu, were detained on July 16 after four-month-old Nana Fidalausi was found drowned in a pond. Adamu had asked the boy to take the crying baby to her mother, who was visiting neighbours. The baby never reached her mother and was found drowned. The boy was charged with culpable homicide, while Adamu was charged with negligence. The court’s decision does not affect the negligence charges against Adamu. – African Eye News Service
