Mondli Makhanya appointed editor of the M&G

Mondli Makhanya, a political editor at the Sunday Times, has been appointed as editor of the Mail&Guardian newspaper from October 1.

Makhanya worked as a general reporter for the Weekly Mail, as the Mail&Guardian was previously known, in the early 1990’s and then completed an internship at Newsweek magazine in New York.

He was also ran the Weekly Mail’s Cape Town bureau in 1994.

He spent three years at The Star as political writer, deputy news editor and executive editor, before moving to the Sunday World, and then onto the Sunday Times.

Trevor Ncube, CEO of M&G Media Limited, said: “Mondli is young and he carries no baggage. He is intelligent and independent minded”.

Howard Barrell, outgoing editor, said Mondli would have been his first, ideal, choice as editor.

“I’m thrilled,” said Barrell, adding that “what makes his appointment even better is that he’s an Orlando Pirates fan”.
