The two men who allegedly confessed to the murder of nine people at the Sizzlers gay massage parlour appeared briefly for the second time in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
The court ordered that the men — taxi driver Trevor Basil Theys (43) and 27-yea-old restaurant waiter Adam Roy Woest — be kept in protective custody at the Goodwood Prison after their legal representatives informed the court they had received death threats at the facility.
The case was postponed to March 6 at the request of prosecutor Tanya Lombard, to enable the legal aid appointed attorneys to consult the two men. Theys and Woest face nine charges of murder, one of attempted murder, one of robbery with aggravating circumstances and one involving the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Both men were arrested on February 13 and are due to attend an identification parade on February 28. Their arrest followed the attack on the brothel in Graham Road, Sea Point on January 20.
The owner of the business Aubrey Otgaar, a client, and seven young employees were shot dead. Most of them had their throats slit.
One employee, known only as Quinton, managed to escape and raised the alarm, although he too had been shot. Two bullets were removed from his head and he is being held in a safe house in the Western Cape.
Theys and Woest were arrested after identikits appeared in newspapers last month. Theys was arrested at a house in Mitchell’s Plein while Woest was arrested at a Waterfront restaurant. Police alleged both men had made full confessions before a Cape Town magistrate. – Sapa
