Racist killer to be sentenced

The sentence procedure in the case of Pretoria bus shooter De Wet Kritzinger is to start in the city’s high court on Friday.

Counsel for the defence and the State are to present their argument in mitigation and aggravation of sentence respectively.

Kritzinger was convicted on Wednesday of the murder of bus driver Mduduzi Graeme Nyembe and passengers Thembekile Constance Phasha and Gogo Connie Mathebula in Constantia Park on January 12, 2000.

Judge Dion Basson also found him guilty of the attempted murder of four more passengers, whom he wounded in a racially motivated shooting spree on the Mamelodi-bound bus.

After the shooting Kritzinger fled to Patensie in the Eastern Cape where he lived in the mountains for six months.

Later he went to live and work in Modimolle (Nylstroom) in Limpopo under an assumed name.

Police arrested him there in June last year. – Sapa
