Asmal gets report on troubled university

A report containing the results of a probe into governance and management problems at the University of Durban-Westville (UDW) was handed to Education Minister Kader Asmal in Pretoria on Saturday.

Asmal received the report from Dr Bongani Khumalo, the independent assessor who conducted the probe, ministerial spokesperson Molatwane Likhethe said.

Among the scandals that rocked UDW during the past year was the news that it had reportedly borrowed R70-million and then placed R69,3-million in an offshore account in 1998, without the approval of its council.

Last month it was reported that UDW vice-chancellor Dr Saths Cooper was overpaid by R126 666 over an eight-month period since he started in that position in January.

That followed a report about a taped conversation in which University of Natal vice-chancellor Professor Malegapuru Makgoba discussed Cooper with a UDW academic.

A merger of the two universities is to become effective from January next year.

Asmal recently announced the names of all the new universities that will come into being as a result of mergers.

At the time, he said no name had been designated for the new single entity in KwaZulu-Natal yet. That would only be done after he had received the report.

The education ministry has scheduled a news conference for Tuesday to release of the report. ‒ Sapa
