SA All-Africa Games athlete guilty of steroid use

Athletics South Africa (ASA) announced on Monday that its doping tribunal, chaired by Monty Hacker, having considered all the evidence presented to the tribunal last week, has found steeplechase athlete Alexandra Motone guilty of a doping offence in terms of the rules of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

Motone tested positive for the banned substance 19-Norandrosterone on September 27 this year at the All-Africa Games camp in Boksburg.

Nandrolone is classified as an anabolic steroid, as listed in the IAAF Procedural Guidelines for Doping Control, Schedule 1, Prohibited Substances, Part I a (i).

With regard to the findings, ASA is duly bound to uphold the provisions of IAAF Rule 60.2 (a) (i) that states: ”First offence: The athlete shall be ineligible for a minimum of two years from the date of the hearing at which it is decided that a doping offence has been committed. When an athlete has served a period of suspension prior to a declaration of ineligibility, such a period of suspension shall be deducted from the period of ineligibility imposed by the relevant tribunal.

Motone is therefore declared ineligible for a period of two years starting on October 7 and ending on October 6 2005.

Should Motone wish to return to athletics competition after his period of ineligibility, according to IAAF Rule 57.6 he must make himself available for out-of-competition testing at any time during his period of ineligibility.

Motone will be required to take at least three competition tests, with at least four months between each test.

A final test for the full range of prohibited substances will then be conducted immediately prior to the end of the suspension period. — Sapa
