Former South African MPs will get free air tickets according to their years of service in terms of a motion adopted in the National Assembly on Thursday.
The motion, moved by African National Congress Chief Whip Nathi Nhleko, proposed that former MPs who had served a minimum of five consecutive years in Parliament either before or after 1994 receive four single air tickets for every year of service up to a maximum of 15 years.
However, this is subject to the tickets being for the personal use of the former MP and his or her spouse or partner accompanying the former member.
Except for tickets accruing in 2003, which could be rolled over for use next year, tickets not used in the year applicable would be forfeited.
Only economy-class tickets would be issued.
The motion was unanimously adopted by the House. — Sapa
