Danish users of third-generation (3G) cellphones have been advised to consider precautions to avoid being harassed by flashers using the new technology, the Danish National Consumer Agency said on Tuesday.
The new high-speed technology that allows users to send and receive video clips also attracts abuse. The agency said it has learned of a few cases where flashers sent indecent images to owners of 3G handsets.
The flashers guard their anonymity by using unlisted telephone numbers.
The company 3, currently the sole provider of 3G video services in Denmark, said it has not received any complaints.
The Consumer Agency said subscribers should consider keeping their old telephone numbers when signing on to 3, making it harder for the flashers to gather numbers via internet-based directories that list cellphone operators.
At the end of June, the operator 3 said it had more than 50 000 3G subscribers in Denmark.
The Consumer Agency also urged consumers to report unwanted indecent video messages to the police, citing that they had been subjected to indecent assault. — Sapa-DPA
