The price of petrol will rise by 38 cents next week, bringing the Gauteng price to an all-time high of R5 a litre.
The Department of Minerals and Energy said on Tuesday the price of all categories of fuel will rise.
The wholesale price of diesel with a 0,3% sulphur content will increase by 55 cents per litre, and that with a 0,05% sulphur content by 65 cents.
The wholesale price of paraffin is going up 48 cents per litre, while the maximum retail price will increase by 65 cents.
Departmental spokesperson Yvonne Mfolo said these prices are projections, which will be finalised on Friday or Monday.
The prices include increases of five cents per litre in fuel tax and five cents per litre in the Road Accident Fund levy announced by the minister of finance on February 23.
The increases will take effect on Wednesday April 6.
This follows another steep increase earlier this month, in which petrol went up 42 cents a litre, and diesel between 33 and 35 cents.
Since the beginning of the current fuel-price review period (February 26), international crude oil prices increased to levels above $50 per barrel.
International product prices of petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin have followed the upward price movement in international crude oil prices.
High international demand for diesel and illuminating paraffin contributed to substantial price increases of these products, the Department of Minerals and Energy added.
The department said the average rand/dollar exchange rate, compared with the previous review period, strengthened only slightly and contributed to about R2 a litre in reducing the increasing impact of international product prices. — Sapa, I-Net Bridge
