Language For Life

Language For Life is an OBE language learning programme on HIV/Aids for learners in the intermediate phase. The set comprises a Teacher’s Guide, Learner’s Book and a Reader.

It aims to generate HIV/Aids awareness in the classroom through an activities-based approach. It looks to develop the skills of reading, comprehension, writing, speaking, listening and thinking in a learner-centred way, promoting interaction between learners and teachers. A glossary of terms such as antibodies, symptoms, infection and virus is also provided. The books are user-friendly with illustrations, classroom exercises and group discussions, some of the subjects being key principles of health issues and social justice.

The reader Song of Hope is the story of 12-year old Nomathemba, whose mother is HIV-positive. It tells of the hardships facing her family and how they’ve been affected by HIV/Aids, while still giving hope to children affected by the disease.

In Language Learning, Maphongwane tells her own story, including the day she disclosed her HIV status to her family, how she learned to live with HIV, as well as her involvement within the

community.

The package aims to develop children’s skills, values, know-ledge and attitudes towards HIV and Aids. The package will soon be available in the other official languages and will be on offer to schools from February 2004.
