Santos ensure survival

Santos made certain of remaining in the Premier Soccer League when they drew their match with Silver Stars 1-1 in a game played at the Athlone Stadium on Sunday night.

Santos were leading 1-0 at the interval.

Santos took the lead in the 39th minute when a Marawaan Bantam free kick from 30m out hit the underside of the crossbar and went in, giving goalkeeper Gareth Ormshaw no chance.

The visitors came close in the 40th minute when Oscar Ntwagae moved smartly across the field, beating several defenders, but his shot was well blocked.

Just before the break, Thembile Kanono crossed and Jean-Mark Ithier’s header grazed the upright and the teams headed into half-time with the home team enjoying a narrow lead.

The visitors were then on equal terms in the 75th minute when substitute Brian van Wyk’s corner kick from the right went off a defender for an own goal.

The game was played at a fast pace and the old men in the Santos team — Edries Burton and Musa Ongao — played their hearts out. — Sapa
