Alexander Forbes appoints first black MD

Gari Dombo has been appointed as managing director of Alexander Forbes Personal Insurance Services, a division of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange-listed Alexander Forbes group, with immediate effect.

He is the first black MD to be appointed by the group.

Following his appointment, Dombo will also join the Risk and Insurance Services Board. Dombo succeeds Anton Ossip, the former MD of Alexander Forbes Personal Insurance Services. In his capacity as MD he will report to Anton Ossip, the newly appointed chief executive of Alexander Forbes Risk & Insurance Services and Personal Services.

Dombo has twelve years experience in the short term insurance industry in South Africa. Prior to his appointment as MD he was a senior executive at Alexander Forbes Personal Insurance Services, responsible for underwriting. Dombo holds a MBA degree from the University of Natal and is currently studying a post-graduate degree in risk management. In addition, he has completed management development programmes at the University of Stellenbosch, the University of Berkley, USA, and the University of Stockholm, Sweden.

He is an Associate of the Chartered Institute Of Insurance in Hillcrest, London, a member of the Society of Fellows and a fellow of the Insurance Industry in South Africa.

Dombo was among the first group to attend the Executive Leadership Programme run by Inseta (the nsurance Sector Education and Training Authority) in 2003 through the University of Cape Town Business School. ‒I-Net Bridge
