Man commits suicide as police arrive

A KwaZulu-Natal man committed suicide inside his home on Friday as police waited for him to open the door to arrest him for allegedly attempting to kill his wife.

According to police spokesperson Captain Tienkie van Vuuren, Lucky Mthethwa (50) was wanted for the attempted murder of his wife, Lilly Mthethwa (41), at Kwambonambi on Monday.

”The police members knocked on the door and identified themselves.”

While waiting for someone to open the door, they heard a gunshot and at first thought that they were being fired upon, but realised that the shot had come from within.

Upon entering the house, they found Mthethwa dead with a gunshot wound to the head.

”He had committed suicide,” said Van Vuuren.

She said Mthethwa had allegedly tried to kill his wife. She was in a stable condition in hospital after she was shot in the left thigh and lower leg.

”The couple has a history of domestic violence and a restraining order was previously issued on the deceased who had left his home at Mandlankala for some time, but for some reason he returned on July 18.

”His licensed firearm was also previously confiscated and is still in police custody,” said Van Vuuren.

She said Mthethwa had used an unlicensed firearm to kill himself. — Sapa
