More documents seized in Cape Town tender probe

Police on Tuesday seized more documents in their continuing probe into claims of tender irregularities in Cape Town, this time from offices in the Civic Centre.

Last week detectives raided the offices of procurement director Mabela Satekge in Wale Street in the city centre, as part of what mayoral spokesperson Mandla Tyala said was an investigation into security tenders awarded by the city.

The mayor’s office claimed then that police documents indicated the raid was carried out ”at the behest” of Western Cape premier Ebrahim Rasool, a claim which Rasool has denied.

Tyala said Tuesday’s police action was ”essentially a continuation of the earlier search”.

He said the police learned in the Wale Street raid that some of the documents they were looking for were in the procurement section offices at the Civic Centre, and they had to apply for a fresh search warrant.

”All the documents they were looking for were made available to them,” he said. ”Everything went smoothly.”

He denied a claim by a council source that the police had specifically targeted the office of the city’s chief financial officer, Ike Nxedlana, saying he was merely the overall head of the procurement section.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Riaan Pool said he would not comment on ongoing investigations. – Sapa
