Travelgate: Cabinet minister implicated

A Cabinet minister and two deputy ministers are among 86 MPs implicated in the Travelgate scandal, the Saturday Star reported.

It said the names of a senior African National Congress MP and a premier were also on the ”A list” drawn up by forensic investigators and senior officials from Parliament.

The ”A list” has been a subject of a prolonged battle aimed at suppressing it, the newspaper said, adding it was in possession of the document.

Several politicians, who are already facing criminal charges in connection with the abuse of the institution’s travel vouchers, were also on the ”A list”.

The 86 politicians, whose names appear on the list, have been asked to explain who paid for land-based travel — mostly hired cars — and other related expenses that they booked through Bathong Travel, one of the implicated travel agencies.

Bathong Travel boasted 225 MPs as clients and is currently under investigation for fraud, including allegedly refunding R8-million worth of air tickets, the newspaper said. – Sapa
