Counterfeiting ring fails to get the numbers right

Three people were arrested in Vietnam for trafficking fake $1-million bills although the largest number on the real thing is $100, a newspaper reported on Monday.

The counterfeiting ring was uncovered by police in Tay Ninh province, according to the Thanh Nien, [Youth], newspaper. Two of the suspects were discovered carrying several $1-million notes and photocopies of certificates issued by the US Federal Reserve, the newspaper said

A third suspect was later arrested with two suitcases containing $46-million in fake $500 000- and $1-million bills as well as fake notes in British, Japanese and German currencies, the report said. Germany no longer prints its own currency because it began using the euro in 2002.

Police in Tay Ninh province in Southern Vietnam confirmed they arrested three people for counterfeiting, but they refused further comment until they finish investigating the case.

Truong Van Dung, one of the men arrested, told police that he had bought the notes for $12 500 from a man in Lang Son province, which borders China, the newspaper said. – Sapa-DPA
