Jakarta: ‘Pollution City’ and not afraid to admit it

With its hazy skies, traffic-clogged streets and fume-belching vehicles, the Indonesian capital Jakarta is poking fun at its constant state of pollution in a bid to clear the air.

To mark World Environment Day, authorities on Monday unveiled six giant billboards around Jakarta reading “Welcome to Pollution City”, with an illustration of a couple holding their noses.

City environmental officials say they hope the billboards will boost public awareness and spark community efforts to reduce pollution.

In 2003, the Indonesian capital had only seven days when its air quality was in the healthy range, according to a report released by the United States-Asia Environmental Parternership Programme last year. – AFP
