Telkom said on Monday there has been no discussions on the sale of the South African telecommunications group.
The group said it had taken note of speculative reports in the weekend press that United Kingdom group Vodafone was interested in a takeover bid of the fixed-line operator.
It said that Papi Molotsane, CEO of Telkom, and Vodafone CEO Arun Sarin, did meet during the course of last week, but that this meeting had purely been to discuss issues of cooperation between the two companies.
“This meeting was one of a series of meetings regarding Vodacom’s future growth,” it added.
Papi Molotsane said: “The objective of the meeting was to explore possibilities of maximising our joint investment in Vodacom.”
“At no stage did the two representatives discuss the sale of Telkom. All matters relating to such a sale can only be discussed by the board,” a Telkom spokesperson added.
Vodafone recently upped its stake in Vodacom to 50%, equalling the stake held by Telkom in the local mobile services provider. — I-Net Bridge
