Chinese artist experiences life as caged lion

A Chinese performance artist has locked himself up in a lion’s den to experience life as a caged animal, Xinhua news agency reported on Friday.

Poet and performance artist Ye Fu, who once built himself a bird’s nest atop a Beijing building, locked himself in a lion’s cage on Tuesday in the eastern city of Qingdao.

He plans to stay for 10 days in his cage, which has been cleared of real lions, at the Forest Wild Life World animal park to draw attention to the plight of zoo animals, Xinhua said.

He will eat raw meat, just like a caged lion, and refrain from human activities such as talking, changing clothes and going to the bathroom in private, the agency said.

There will be no contact, physical or otherwise, with a 26-year-old woman who will share his cage, it said.

Last year, Ye drew widespread attention when he built the nest atop an upscale office building in central Beijing and lived there for a month through rain and shine. — AFP
