The security guard who shot dead a Pick ‘n Pay manager and a taxi driver at the Workshop shopping centre in Durban has been arrested, police said.
Superintendent Gugu Sabela said the man was arrested in Umlazi, south of Durban, at 1am on Friday.
A minibus taxi driver who dropped the man off in Umlazi after the incident on Thursday night led police to the area where the arrest was made.
The security guard from Siza Security was on duty at the shopping centre in Commercial Road, central Durban, when he allegedly demanded money from a manager around 7.30pm.
”He shot him and fled from the scene,” said Sabela. ”He had a shotgun and a pistol and he used the pistol.” The manager died on the scene.
The security guard escaped with an undisclosed amount of money and went to the Pine Street rank for meter taxis, shot dead a taxi driver, then hijacked a taxi from another driver. The second taxi driver was not injured.
The robber drove off in the stolen taxi and crashed into another vehicle nearby. He then fled on foot.
”Later he took a minibus taxi to Umlazi and that driver led us [police] to Umlazi where the man was arrested,” said Sabela.
She said the security guard would appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court early next week. – Sapa
