Satawu truckers threaten strike action

Truckers and others working in the road-freight industry could go on strike soon, the South African Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu) warned on Thursday.

Satawu spokesperson Ronnie Mamba said negotiations with road-freight sector employers had collapsed.

The union and employers have been in discussions since last year over salary increments, allowances for ultra long distances and working conditions.

The industry employs cash-in-transit workers and drivers of ”road ferry” trucks, furniture trucks and long-distance trucks.

”Workers will issue a 48-hour notice soon and the strike can commence any time in the mandatory 48-hour notice,” Mamba said.

He said there are about 60 000 people working in the industry. — Sapa
