Hostage drama in Cape Town restaurant

A hostage drama ended in central Cape Town on Saturday night when police stormed the Nyoni’s Kraal restaurant, shooting dead the hostage taker and releasing the hostages.

Inspector Bernadine Steyn said a specialised police team set off a stun grenade and several shots were fired when they entered the restaurant shortly after 6.30pm.

”The police went in. Several shots were fired and the suspect, a 26-year-old male, was fatally wounded.”

Police released two hostages, one of whom was the man’s wife who had been shot in the leg. A passerby was also hit by a stray bullet.

The hostage situation began at 10am. Police arrived on the scene at noon. – Sapa
