Poll shows SA against World Cup prostitution plan

Most South Africans — 79% — are against the proposed legalisation of prostitution in the country for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, a survey by African Response has found.

The survey included a sample of 400 respondents from the major metropolitan areas of Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. The participants were interviewed face to face.

Police National Commissioner Jackie Selebi was the inspiration behind the poll when earlier this year he asked the National Assembly to give serious consideration on what to do about prostitution and public drinking during the 2010 World Cup.

The poll asked people if they thought South Africa would be ready to host the soccer spectacle in 2010.

Sixty-seven percent said the country would be ready for the World Cup. — Sapa
