Solidarity accepts wage offer in chemical sector

Trade union Solidarity on Friday accepted a wage offer from employers in the chemical industry after the employer increased its offer from 7,5% to 8%.

Solidarity spokesperson Marius Croucamp said his union, along with the South African Chemical Workers’ Union (Sacwu), accepted the 8% wage increase.

”The agreement is in line with the final mandate of our members and we are satisfied,” he said.

Joseph Maqhekeni, president of Sacwu, could not be reached for comment.

However, the Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood and Allied Workers Union (Ceppwawu) and the General Industrial Workers’ Union of South Africa (Giwusa) have not accepted the offer.

They are demanding a 10% increase.

If a settlement is not reached on Friday, an indefinite strike may take place on Monday. — Sapa
