Jub Jub murder case postponed

Jub Jub Murder Case Postponed

The murder case of Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye and Themba Tshabalala was postponed in the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday to allow for further investigation into the circumstances of a car crash that killed four schoolchildren in the area.

The case began at 8.30am, with Jub Jub wearing a grey pin-striped suit, and Tshabalala arriving without his dreadlocks.

In contrast to previous appearances when protesters stretched police resources, the two appeared relaxed as the case was set for May 28 in the same court.

Maarohanye and Tshabalala were accused of killing four schoolboys while driving their Mini-Coopers on March 8.

The prosecution had said preliminary tests showed the two men had cocaine and morphine in their system. Tshabalala was also twice the legal alcohol limit.

They face charges of murder, reckless or negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.

They each received R10 000 bail in a hearing last month that saw hundreds of students protesting outside the court.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said outside the court that the director of public prosecutions would have to decide whether the case should be moved to a regional or a high court and to confirm the charge, which is expected to be finalised by May 28. — Sapa
