It’s a crime

Two smoking hot girls have landed themselves in the criminal news limelight recently.

The first will watch her mother appear in court today for allegedly hiring Nigerians to kill her rugby-playing boyfriend, after having an affair with him.

Not even 7de Laan could create a story line like that. But in Middleburg, you don’t have to make this stuff up apparently.

The second was laid to rest in North London yesterday, after she was tragically shot and possibly sexually assaulted during an inexplicable late night ride to Cape Town township Gugulethu during her honeymoon.

Predictably, the coverage has dominated news sites, locally — and in the honeymoon shooting — internationally.

First, the comical.

The story of the cougar and the Blue Bulls player is not inspiration for a new KykNet series, the basis of Paul Krüger’s next Afrikaans musical or, as writer . We ignore violent crime when it is confined to the areas that apartheid’s planning so effectively removed from middle-class consciousness. But we dwell with glee on those that involve rugby players and, if possible, a hot model or two.

Are we selective about the crime stories we’re interested in? I hope not. Because all injustice deserves our attention.
