Young Durban artists prove their mettle in a variety of media this week.
? Painter Robert S Bolter’s solo exhibition, Cut, has a highly apt moniker given the raw, visceral nature of his works. Although Bolter’s paintings resonate with the spirit of abstract impressionism, his work also carries compelling conceptual heft. In the same gallery is a new group exhibition titled Migration that features the latest creations of three prominent Durban artists: Floris van Zyl, Cally Lotz and Sue Physick. All three artists interrogate the concept of migration in intriguing mixed-media artworks.

? There are three things to see at the KZNSA Gallery. First is Isomorphicintergrammar Code Switching, an installation by Lolette Smith. She is a sign-language interpreter, who ties together language codes and enriches our understanding of communication. Second is Phenomenal Engagement, a collaboration by Chris and Marlene de Beer, both lecturers in the fine art and jewellery design department at the Durban University of Technology. By laying bare their preoccupations and processes, the artists extend the boundaries of what is conventionally considered to be jewellery. Third is Durban photographer Angela Buckland’s new photographic installation, Block A, Thokoza Women’s Hostel, which is constructed from 700 small photographs to form a large-scale image that depicts the beauty and intimacy of each hostel resident’s living space.
