The Soul Brothers’ lead singer was arrested at his home in Mofolo Park, Soweto, for assaulting his wife, police said on Wednesday. Spokesperson Inspector Kay Makhubele said police had been looking for David Masondo (58) since February 2. ”A case was opened and a protection order was sought against him by his wife, Nomsa,” he said.

The Mozambican government announced on Wednesday that it was scrapping a planned increase in bus fares as the death toll from riots sparked by the price hikes rose to three. Calm had returned to the streets of Maputo on Thursday after the riots, which residents said were the most serious since 1975.

Seven doctors and pharmacists went on trial on Wednesday over the deaths of more than 100 people from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) that occurred years after the victims were treated, while still children, with tainted human-growth hormones. American forces in Baghdad on Wednesday warned of a ”disturbing trend in the use and exploitation of children by al-Qaeda in Iraq”, after discovering videos showing young boys being trained in kidnapping and assassination. In one of the videos about 20 boys are seen bristling with pistols, assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenade launchers.
