SA relay runners now world champions

The decision of the Council of Arbitration for Sport to suspend American sprinter Tim Montgomery along with Chryste Gaines for doping violations means that the South African men’s relay quartet of Morne Nagel, Corne du Plessis, Lee-Roy Newton and Matthew Quinn have now become the world champions.

‘Hoax e-mail’ court bid put on ice

An application for the setting aside of an arrest warrant for an information technology consultant implicated in an alleged National Intelligence Agency hoax e-mail scam was put on ice on Tuesday. The application was removed from the Pretoria High Court’s urgent roll by consent of all the parties involved.

Govt denies fuel shortages

As motorists struggled to find petrol on Monday, the government denied any fuel shortages inland. The situation inland constituted ”an inconvenience rather than a crisis”, and motorists should not wait for their tanks to empty before filling up, Minerals and Energy Minister Lindiwe Hendricks told reporters in Pretoria.

The Titans jumped back to the top of the Standard Bank Cup table after stuttering to an exciting two-wicket win over the luckless Cape Cobras at Supersport Park on Sunday. SA observer team readies for DRC

A South African observer team is to leave this week for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to monitor the country’s first multiparty elections in over four decades, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Aziz Pahad said on Tuesday. The 128-strong contingent, which will leave on Wednesday, will be led by Minister of Safety and Security Charles Nqakula.

Economy buoyant, says Reserve Bank

The South African Reserve Bank on Friday painted a picture of a buoyant South African economy, with citizens better off financially and spending briskly. By the third quarter of the year, the economy had expanded uninterruptedly for 24 successive quarters, says the bank’s quarterly bulletin released in Pretoria.

Balfour gets tough on prisoners

High-risk offenders in prisons will have their privileges curbed over the festive season to prevent possible escape attempts, says Correctional Services Minister Ngconde Balfour. Many offenders did all in their power to escape from incarceration, apparently in pursuit of further criminal activities over this time.

SA asks Equatorial Guinea to free crewmen

South Africa’s director-general of Foreign Affairs has convened a meeting with Equatorial Guinea ambassador Juan Ncuchuma to try to secure the return of two nationals being held in that country. Aircraft crew members Sechan Pillay and Ruwayda Kalbine have been held in Equatorial Guinea for five weeks due to problems between two companies involved in a string of aviation sub-contracts.

No Mandela Christmas party this year

The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund opted out of a big bash for underprivileged kids this year, and will instead deliver gifts to schools, it said on Wednesday. This was done in an attempt to ”minimise exposing children to unnecessary difficulties”, the fund said in a statement.

The Pan Africanist Congress on Friday presented documents to the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development requesting the release of members of its former military wing, the Azanian Peoples Liberation Army. These are soldiers who were arrested for their role in the anti-apartheid struggle, the PAC said.

The Tshwane metropolitan council would not commit itself on Tuesday to removing all forms of advertising proclaiming Tshwane rather than Pretoria as South Africa’s capital. Such advertisements have been found to be misleading by the Advertising Standards Authority — a ruling the council said it respects.

More than a million South Africans registered to vote in next year’s municipal elections during the Independent Electoral Commission’s final registration drive over the weekend. This brings to 21-million the number of South Africans now on the voters’ roll. The country has a population of 43-million to 44-million.

Contract signed with Germany for nuclear reactor

South African nuclear vendor PBMR has signed a contract with German company SGL Carbon for the supply of hardware for the construction of an envisaged demonstration power plant. The contract, worth about €20-million (or R154 million), was the largest hardware order placed by PBMR so far, the company said in a statement on Tuesday.

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s former financial adviser Addy Moolman is finally to start serving his four-year jail sentence, the Pretoria High Court heard on Monday. Judge MF Legodi on Monday dismissed Moolman’s urgent application for bail, pending an application to the Constitutional Court about the constitutionality of his sentence.

The matric results will be announced on December 29, Minister of Education Naledi Pandor said on Monday. Majority of South Africans registered to vote

A majority of South Africans questioned in a Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) survey said they were registered to vote, the council said on Saturday. The survey of 4 930 people conducted by the HSRC on behalf of the Independent Electoral Commission found that 81,9% indicated they had registered to vote, said researcher Mbithi wa Kivilu.

‘Where is Rasuge’s body?’

The killing of Constable Francis Rasuge was an ”appalling” crime, Judge Ronald Hendricks told murderer William Nkuna as he sentenced him to life in prison on Thursday. Nkuna was convicted last month of killing Constable Francis Rasuge, even though her remains have not been found. She was last seen with him outside a hair salon in Temba on August 27 last year.
