A gallant Gareth Ormshaw denied Bush Bucks their second successive victory in the Castle Premier Soccer League on Monday evening. The Lamontville Golden Arrows goalkeeper was rock solid and ensured his team walked away with a point after the two teams played to a goalless draw at the Absa Stadium in East London.

ANC members suspended after violence

The African National Congress in the Western Cape is acting against branches and members involved in a series of violent scuffles at party meetings in Khayelitsha on Sunday. At least eight party members have been suspended and face further disciplinary action after a branch meeting in Khayelitsha turned violent on Sunday.

Figures released by Statistics South Africa show that "expanded unemployment" stood at 8,1-million people in South Africa by March this year — compared to 6,4-million in September 2000. Things have become much worse on the unemployment front, the Democratic Alliance said in reaction.

Wildfires start claiming lives

Wildfires began claiming lives — both human and animal — on Monday as they ran unabated across the hot, dry countryside, fanned by heavy winds. A six-year-old girl, Bonakele Ngema, burnt to death in a house where she was trapped while seeking refuge from a roaring blaze that bore down on her in Mntanenkosi reserve, KwaZulu-Natal.

Famine kills children in Malawi

Food shortages as a result of ongoing drought and crop failures have claimed the lives of at least 29 children in Malawi since January, according to reports published on Monday. The severely malnourished children were being kept at a United Nations World Food Programme rehabilitation centre at the time of their deaths.

Ex-DA MPs lost their seats, court hears

The five Democratic Alliance MPs who defected to other parties during the 15-day floor-crossing period earlier this month actually lost their seats, the Cape High Court heard on Monday. DA counsel Jan Heunis said the floor-crossing legislation requires a minimum of 10% of a party’s MPs should leave their party ”in a bloc”.

Get your facts straight, govt tells Cosatu leader

The health ministry has responded angrily to Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi’s criticism of its Aids policies, labelling remarks by the trade union leader at the weekend as ”irresponsible” and saying he needs to get his facts straight. Vavi accused the government of a ”lack of leadership” when it comes to managing HIV.

Pharmacists billing fridges and television sets to the medical-aid accounts of prison staff are among the types of fraud uncovered in the Department of Correctional Services in recent years. The department saved about R500-million in medical-aid claims in the 2004/05 financial year by clamping down on fraud and corruption.

Firefighters were put on standby in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape on Monday after fears that blazes in four other provinces could spread, a public-private firefighting organisation said. Working on Fire spokesperson Val Charlton said fires are raging in Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State and Mpumalanga.

State printer runs out of money

The Government Printing Works (GPW) which prints identity documents and passports could collapse if state departments failed to pay about R150-million that it is owed, media reports said on Monday. GPW chief executive Tom Moyane warned of the possibility of closure, saying ageing printing machinery needed millions of rand to replace.

Miriam Makeba says farewell to the international stage

After a career of more than 50 years, South Africa’s legendary singer and anti-apartheid activist Miriam Makeba has decided she will end her performing days with a farewell international tour that starts in Johannesburg on Monday. ”I have to go and say farewell to all the countries that I have been to, if I can. I am 73 now, it is taxing on me,” Makeba said in an interview.

Former South African Football Association leader Solomon ”Stix” Morewa died in his sleep at his Fourways home, north of Johannesburg, in the early hours of Sunday, his family said. Before his death, Morewa (61) had been suffering from complications related to diabetes.

The Sharks rediscovered their emphatic form of the early rounds of the Absa Currie Cup when they blew the Leopards off the park on Saturday in an exhilarating display of attacking rugby. KZN premier to lead show of support for Zuma

KwaZulu-Natal Premier S’bu Ndebele has pledged to lead a delegation of top ANC leaders to support axed deputy president Jacob Zuma when he appears in court on October 11, the Sunday Times reports. Ndebele, a close ally of President Thabo Mbeki, has recently been under pressure from his mainly Zuma-supporting colleagues in the province, said the newspaper.
