The African National Congress in the Western Cape is acting against branches and members involved in a series of violent scuffles at party meetings in Khayelitsha on Sunday. The search for the missing Durban yacht Moquini has been called off, the coordinator of the civilian search, Matthew Thomas, said on Monday evening. The Moquini went missing in the Mauritius-to-Durban yacht race two weeks ago. Three aircraft were involved in a private search for the yacht.

A man was killed when a tree fell on top of him during high winds on Monday night at Zevenfontein informal settlement, north of Johannesburg. Monday night also saw large areas of Gauteng plunged into darkness and roofs flying off houses. Johannesburg emergency services received about 1 500 emergency calls.

The health ministry has responded angrily to Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi’s criticism of its Aids policies, labelling remarks by the trade union leader at the weekend as ”irresponsible” and saying he needs to get his facts straight. Botswana wildlife officers, armed with rifles, have begun to patrol the Central Kalahari Game Reserve in their latest attempt to drive Bushmen out of their homes, Survival International reported on Friday. Spokesperson Miriam Ross said the officers had harassed and threatened the Bushmen.
